El Son Y Su Esencia

 

The purpose of this project is to present an interactive cultural collaboration of scholars, dancers and musicians that will explore the origins and influences of El Son on present day popular culture, dance and music, particularly on the style of music and dance that is today know as New York Salsa. 

In keeping with the mission of Raices Cultural Arts Association, Ltd., this project also provides a platform for scholars and artists to showcase their work and knowledge to the local community. 

About El Son

El Son is a style of music and dance that originated in Cuba during the mid-19th century and gained worldwide popularity during the 1930s. Typical instruments used in Son are: Tres guitar, marímbula or double bass, bongo, claves, maracas, guiro, and trumpet. El Son also inspired cultural & societal characteristics that expanded from Cuba to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
